Photo Story Friday: MomOf3 Versus the Wasp!

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

I have a bug phobia. I have had it for as long as I can remember. Spiders are the worst, but wasps are a close second.
Remember my magical cats from last week? Want to know how they earn their keep?
They are BUG SLAYERS!
In the past, they have caught mostly flies. They have hunted moths, but let's just say their enthusiasm outweights their ability. :)
Their biggest quarry yet made the mistake of entering Mighty Cat Territory on Wednesday afternoon, and for the life of my I honestly don't know how it was so stupid to get caught the way that it did....
I walked into the kitchen after hearing Miney and Moe meow their kitty warning.
At first I was a little ticked off that Moe was on the kitchen counter. Neither one of them has done that in ages.
Then I heard the buzzzzzzzzzzz...

Moe was staring right at where the wasp was. And let me tell you - he was a healthy little guy.

He was buzzing around and trying to fly. The poor thing.

I would like to tell you that I was brave, dismantled the light fixture, caught the wasp and threw him outside to safety.

Unfortunately the wasp's safety could not be my my top priority. I had three little kids very interested in what I was doing. I explained that while we usually catch bugs and throw them outside, we could not do that in this case. Wasps sting.

So I was judge, jury, and, thanks to a can of Raid, executioner. I hate killing things, but he should not have come inside the house.

The only way I can think that he got into that light fixture was that he got into the attic and sqeezed through the wiring in the light fixture. There was no way he would have fit between the light fixture and the ceiling.

Ick!

P.S. If you are looking for a fun new contest check this out! I Gotta Theory About That blog is having a fun give away - Good luck!

The Last Pumpkin in Town!

Last night DadOf3 and I went out to vote early. Early voting ends tomorrow here in FamilyOf5Land. We both figured the lines would be shorter today than next Tuesday, and they were not too bad. It was challenging to vote with three kids in tow, but we got the job done.

I have been a bit distracted the last week or so, so I completely spaced out getting a pumpkin for Halloween, so last night when we were out and about we went searching for one. The pickings were mighty slim, but we managed to score a pumpkin. It is not the prettiest looking thing in the world, in fact, it is a little bit on the scary side, but isn't that the point? It is a pumpkin and it will be carved tonight and it will make our trio happy - all for the low, low price of $3.99.

And yes, I am going to ask DadOf3 to make the first few cuts because that is indeed a hole on the top of that pumpkin and I don't know what is living in there.

Tackle It Tuesday - Laundry Room!

My Laundry Room is something that gets away from me every once and a while and then I have to beat it back to submission. Part of the reason is that it is not only a Laundry Room but toy storage, and household cleaner storage.
Here is a before picture:
Another BEFORE picture:

And the AFTER picture - 2 hours later.
And the final AFTER picture.

The room feels so much calmer now. Plus I got 7 loads of laundry done too, so woo hoo!

5 Interesting Things We Did This Weekend

Kristi has a weekend update meme that I am going to try this week:

What are 5 intesting things you did this weekend?
  1. Friday I kept Princess home from school. She was running a temperature of 103.3. She was just not herself on Thursday night at supper. She was grumpy and not eating anything. She had complained of a headache earlier that afternoon and I wish I would have taken her temperature then. Instead I had her lay down on the couch for a half hour before doing homework. Next time she has a headache, she is getting her temperature taken ASAP! Unfortunately we were supposed to go camping with her girl scout troop this weekend. There was no way I was going to let her sleep outside with a temperature. She kept the temperature throughout the day on Friday.
  2. Saturday DadOf3 spent almost the entire day outside working on the deck. I made some good progress cleaning our room and straightening the middle room upstairs. The kids ran inside and outside for most of the day so it was an OK way to split parenting duties.
  3. Sunday around 4:00 the Prince came downstairs after having a bad dream. We pulled him into bed with us. About a half an hour later, I heard the Knight playing outside our bedroom. I went out and convinced him to snuggle on the couch.
  4. We decided at the last minute to not go to church on Sunday and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The Prince started to throw up right about the time we would have been pulling into the church parking lot. He only threw up that one time, but he was fighting an upset tummy all day. Poor little guy.
  5. I started working on our Christmas letter.

That's about it! I hope you had a good weekend!

Photostory Friday #8!

PhotoStory Friday

Did I ever mention that I have magic cats? It's true!
Magic Cat + soft blanket + tired kiddo = sleeping kiddo
It is magic I tell you!!!
Even my 7 year old is not immune!
The 3 year old gets the "cat nap" treatment on an almost daily basis. I think he is on to me now though...
Just take any unsuspecting child, put a nice, soft blanket on him or her, and add a cat! Before long....

Just wait - because it WILL happen (especially if they are double catted)!
...a tired child will be resting peacfully.

Kindergarten can really wear a guy out! Luckily Mighty Cat is on the job!
It is nearly impossible to resist!

Christmas Memories

Through the years I have found that in order to keep my sanity while mothering three kids, I have to hold on to some things I did before I had children.

I like to write - always have.

It does not always show in this blog because usually I am just trying to get something, anything posted. It is usually a picture or two with a brief explanation, unless it is Wednesday - then you are on your own!

I am going to try to write more and post pictures less. Or maybe I will just write more about the pictures I post. Time will tell. In any event...I have been thinking about Christmas lately. I think it was because my mom was here....

***************************************************************************
What do you remember most about Christmas as a child? Can you take yourself back in time? What do you see? What do you smell? What do you hear?

Christmas to me meant family. On the morning of Christmas Eve, we would pack all of our over-night-bags and gifts into our car and head to Grandma and Grandpa’s house 2 hours away. My sister and I would sing Christmas carols in the back seat, and, every once in a while, mom and dad would join in. As we got older, we even tried to harmonize. This would usually send us into a fit of giggles that lasted until we arrived at Grandma and Grandpa’s front door.

Grandma and Grandpa’s house was small. It was built in the late 1800s or early 1900s, and Grandma and Grandpa had lived there forever (or as long as forever is to a 10 year old). Grandpa had bought the house as a fixer-upper. Through the years he had added a bathroom – yep a bathroom – and a kitchen. He’d also spruced up the living room with some sleek, wood panel wall covering that was quite popular in the 1970s. This information came out years later. All I knew at the time was that this was Grandma and Grandpa’s house, and I loved going there.

When we arrived, Grandpa was always at the door to greet us and give us a great, big bear hug. He wasn’t big on saying “I love you”, but he didn’t need to say it. We knew. After hugs from Grandpa, we would race to the living room to see who could get to Grandma first. Grandma always sat in the very same spot every single time – the middle of three cushions on the sofa. I think this placement was strategic! She wanted as many people able to sit around her as possible. Grandma had arthritis. It was in her hands, gnarled and bent. It was in her feet – she could not walk without assistance. She had to be in great pain, but we kids never knew that. We just knew that Grandma loved sitting on the couch, watching soap operas, and doing crossword puzzles. Never once did I hear her complain, not once. When it was time for Grandma to walk somewhere, we raced to see who could move stuff out of her way the fastest. Then Grandpa would help her up, stand behind her, and they would walk together wherever Grandma wanted to go. I can still see them walking, swaying back and forth in time together, almost dancing, with Grandpa holding Grandma’s elbows to steady her. I remember them smiling and laughing as they made their way, slowly through the house.

Through the years, as my 7 cousins and I grew older, this extended family grew. Dates were invited, new spouses were welcomed, and babies were joyously received.

Some things didn’t change though. Grandpa always made a pot roast and ham for our big family dinner. The kitchen was his. My mom and aunts were welcome to help, but Grandpa ruled that roost! The Christmas tree, a small, table-top tree, was put up on a little table to the left of Grandma’s couch. There were gifts, although to be honest, I don’t remember half of them.

I remember Grandpa praying over the meal, thanking God for bringing us all together again safely and asking for our safe return.
I remember sitting at the kids’ table and wanting so badly to be at the big table.
I remember laughing with my cousins.
I remember my cousin Jason (now and Iraq war Veteran)and my Uncle Dick teasing each other. I remember non-stop conversation.
I remember trying to get the adults to hurry up already! It was time to open presents!
I remember my oldest cousin donning a Santa hat to hand out gifts. He was “Head Elf”.
I remember the laughter, the warmth of a full house, and having to open the door to let in some fresh, cold, Iowa winter air. We were a lot of people squeezed into a tiny house….

Most of all, I remember the love.

Thank you, GrandmaOf4, for a GREAT visit!

Mom and me.
Mom and the kids.

We just had a wonderful visit with GrandmaOf4! The visit went way too fast, as they always do. We kept Grandma pretty busy!
Thursday - Grandma and DadOf3 came home from the airport around midnight.
Friday - the big kids went to school. Grandma, the Knight and I headed to the school Friday morning. I read to the Prince's Kindergarten class (They were SO cute!), and then we had lunch with the Prince and then the Princess. Friday night, AB and his mom came over to play. Grandma watched th boys for me while Princess and I ran to the school to see how things were going at set-up for the Festival. Friday night we grilled steaks and chatted.
Saturday - The kids were so excited to go to the Festival on Saturday morning! We headed out early and helped with final set-up preparations. The Festival was lots of fun. The little boys were ready to go by 2:00, but Princess wanted to stay. The boys and Grandma headed for home. Princess stayed with me and walked around with AB and his Dad.
Sunday - We got up too late for church. We were all exhausted. We had a really nice day which included naps! GrandmaOf4 and I went to see the movie W. that evening. It was good. It did not slam the President. It was merely an accound of his life up until the war. Interesting.
Monday - GrandmaOf4 watched the Knight while I took a test. After I got back, I took Grandma and the Knight out to lunch and then we hit the mall. We got back at 2:00. The big kids came home by 3. We had a great night and had beef burgundy for supper - YUMMY! Grandma read with the kids that night before bedtime.
Tuesday - Grandma headed for home this morning. We are going to miss her so much. We had tears after she left, but I reminded the kiddos that she will be back soon and that Grandpa missed her so she needed to go home. We will miss her a lot though... It is always fun when Grandma visits!

Making Cakes for the Cakewalk!

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

This has been a super crazy busy fun day! Princess and Prince's school is having a Festival this weekend. It is a HUGE fund raiser for the school. There are lots of booths, lots of prizes, and lots of FUN. One of the biggest money-maker-booths is the Cakewalk. The kids and I made 16 cakes for the Cakewalk this afternoon! (Writing that just sounds out and out insane, but we did it.) Here is the proof:

Here is the BEFORE picture!

BEFORE decorating (2 are on the stove cooling and two are still in the oven)!

An example of our simple yet functional cakes!

Princess and Prince did this one! I cannot show you all of them because some have the name of their school on it. It is a crazy world we live in...

Prince and Princess decorate one of our Worm Cakes while the Knight runs past!

Worm Cake: chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, crushed Oreo cooies, and Gummy Worms. Yum!

The Final Count!

Now let's hope lots of people come to the Festival and win these cakes!

Raffle for Parker

One of my favorite blogs to follow is Praying for Parker. You may have noticed the handy dandy button on the left side of my blog. This family has been through a lot. Parker was born with some major health issues. Tammy is Parker's mom and she courageously and truthfully writes about what it is like to have a child with special needs. Parker has some major medical procedures coming up in November. To help offset the cost, Tammy is sponsoring a raffle!!

For every $5 donated to Parker's medical fund (button is found on her blog), your name will be put into one of Parker's toy dump trucks and you will have a chance to win a beautiful blanket donated by one of Tammy's friends.

So head on over to Tammy and Parker's blog and support his medical fund if you so choose!

No Boat :'(

Well we decided to make an offer on that boat I posted about a week or so ago. Unfortunately someone else had the same idea. :( She shall not be our Boatis, but with the economy the way it is, maybe that is a blessing in disguise....?

Anyway, some folks asked about it, so I thought I would share! We are still hoping to find a boat before the end of the year. :)

Oh and that quote was from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. TV Mike's mom said it as they were stepping aboard the psycho/scary boat in the movie. :) I have no idea why it stuck with me???

Tired and Dragging, but it was worth it!

I am dragging this morning but it was worth it! DadOf3 and I stayed up chatting last night until about midnight. It was one of those re-connecting nights where we talk about anything and everything that is on our minds.

We have had a few bad things happen this week to people we know. My uncle passed away late last week after an accident burning trash. I was not able to go to the funeral but from what I heard, there were lots of people there, over 400 was the estimate. I did not know my uncle very well, but I was very struck by his obituary. He was 85 years old, he had 8 children, 25 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren. It struck me that he was not that much younger than my grandpa who passed away at 91 a year and a half ago. My aunt and uncle had been married for 65 years!

We also had a friend down here who had a tragedy this week. I cannot help but put myself in her shoes....

In the midst of this saddness, DadOf3 and I were able to talk, reconnect, and even make each other laugh. It is well worth being a little tired this morning.

Still Undecided?

I thought this was a neat link.

It gives 13 statements by either McCain or Obama without telling you who said what. You choose the one that you agree with most and then at the end it tells you who said what and how many statements of each candidate you agree with.

For me, this was right on. I agreed with 11 out of 13 statements said by Obama. It confirmed what I thought I knew. Let me know what you think!

Enjoy!

(P.S. Thanks to KC for pointing out my error when I published this previously!)

Wordless Wednesday: PTA Stuff

Sorry about the word, but you would not know what this is for if I didn't explain it. Back to Wordless next week, I promise!
Some PTA stuff is kind of fun and some of it is kind of boring. Since I have caught my 3rd separate cold since the beginning of the school year (boo! hiss!), I am OK with boring today. My job is to take one of these:
And turn it into one of these: Basically, I am putting these tickets into separate little packs of 25 tickets. We will sell these little beauties for $5 a piece for our annual festival on October 18th. I have done 15 rolls so far.

Boring and brain dead....that is just my speed today!
